123Winter fog snarling air travel? Here’s what you should do if your flight is cancelled

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

According to the DGCA’s Civil Aviation Requirement, passengers can claim compensation in case of flight cancellation. As per the law, airlines must furnish passengers with an alternative flight or a complete refund of the ticket fare, coupled with compensation.

A thick layer of fog has enveloped the Indo-Gangetic plains, extending from Punjab to West Bengal, since Thursday (January 18) night, causing disruptions in air traffic. Satellite imagery reveals the formation of fog over areas in Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan, and west Uttar Pradesh from 8 pm.

An official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted the prevalence of dense to very dense fog in parts of Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Tripura, affecting road transport as well.

Additionally, moderate fog has affected regions in Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. As of 5.30 am, visibility levels recorded were zero meters in Bathinda and Bikaner, 25 meters in Amritsar and Patiala, 50 meters in Ganganagar, Churu, Hisar, Palam, Safdarjung, Jaipur, and Agartala, and 200 meters in Ambala.

Also read: Chaos unleashed as things go beyond flight delays for commuters at Delhi Airport

On January 14 and 15, over 400 flights were delayed, multiple flights cancelled and several were diverted from Delhi due to poor visibility. As airlines can’t control the weather and if a flight is cancelled, they are required to provide refunds for customers whose flights are cancelled.

Know all about your rights if your flight is cancelled or delayed

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA’s) Civil Aviation Requirement, passengers can claim compensation in case of flight cancellation. As per the law, airlines must furnish passengers with the option of an alternative flight or a complete refund of the ticket fare, coupled with compensation. Moreover, for those travelers who have checked in for their initial flight and are awaiting an alternative, the airline is obligated to supply meals and refreshments.

In the event of a flight delay, the airline is required to provide meals and refreshments. Additionally, they must offer passengers the choice of an alternative flight, a full ticket refund, or, depending on the duration of the delay, arrange hotel accommodation inclusive of transportation.

When airlines expect bad weather to create problems for flights, they give travellers a chance to reschedule their trip a few days prior at no extra cost. A simple Google search of your flight or airline will give you details of the flight’s status.

It’s better to be stuck at home than a hotel or be stranded in an airport terminal. Hence, use the airline’s app or website to make sure that your flight is on schedule before heading for the airport. Airlines usually cancel flights hours or even days before departure time.

If you’re already at the airport, it’s time to multi-task to find another flight. Get in line to speak to an airline representative, and or call the airline’s helpline to get the right information. It helps to reach out on X (Twitter).

Most airlines rebook passengers on a later flight for no additional charge, but that depends on whether there are empty seats.

If your flight is delayed and you no longer wish to take the trip, or haven’t found an alternative, the airline is legally required to refund you the full ticket fare, even if you purchased a non-refundable ticket.

You are also entitled to a refund of any bag fees, seat upgrades or other extras that you didn’t get to use.
However, if the forecast for weather is poor and you need to make an urgent trip, you must consider booking a backup flight.

If many flights are cancelled or delayed, akin to what happened on January 15, it will be best if you connect with your airline before heading to the airport, so that you can reschedule your travel and not have to wait at the airport.

Airbus to double investment in India as it foresees need for 2,840 aircraft by 2035

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The move comes at a time when Airbus solidified its position as the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer for the fifth consecutive year. The company revealed last week that it outpaced Boeing in both aircraft deliveries and orders in the competitive aviation market throughout 2023.

Aerospace giant Airbus plans to significantly boost its procurement value from India as it aims to double the total investment to $1.5 billion in the coming years.

Remi Maillard, president and managing director of Airbus India and South Asia, while making this announcement at the “Wings India” event in Hyderabad, said the Indian aviation sector will need 2,840 aircraft by 2035.

According to a Reuters report, India is now the world’s fastest-growing aviation market. The country is investing nearly $12 billion to build new airports and upgrade existing ones. Currently, India has 150 airports. The goal is to increase this number to 200 within the next five years.

Maillard added that Airbus is seeing good demand for orders from India and expects to double the company’s sourcing from the country from $750 million at present.

In a parallel development, Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt Ltd (MASPL) and Airbus Aerostructures GmbH, a subsidiary of Airbus, formalised a new agreement on January 17. This strategic partnership will focus on enhancing collaboration in the production and delivery of metallic components for all Airbus commercial aircraft models, including the immensely popular A320 family.

According to the terms of the agreement, MASPL will dispatch a diverse range of nearly 5,000 metallic components to Airbus in Germany. These components will be sourced from MASPL’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in India.

Notably, this contract supplements existing MASPL programs, where the company directly delivers parts to Airbus facilities in Toulouse, France.

The move comes at a time when Airbus solidified its position as the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer for the fifth consecutive year. The company revealed last week that it outpaced Boeing in both aircraft deliveries and orders in the competitive aviation market throughout 2023.

In another development, Airbus has entered into a significant partnership with Air India, a Tata group-owned airline. This collaboration aims to establish a pilot training facility in Gurugram, Haryana, through a 50:50 joint venture.

Further expanding its footprint in India, Airbus has also joined forces with GMR Aero Technic for aircraft maintenance engineering training courses. This collaboration will leverage GMR Aero Technic’s facility in Hyderabad to impart specialised training, contributing to the development of skilled professionals in the aviation sector.

Summary

This is a follow-up to an earlier order of 76 aircraft the airline placed two years back. As of now, Akasa Air has 22 aircraft in its fleet, while there are 202 Boeing 737 MAX that are yet to be delivered.

Indian airline Akasa Air has ordered 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. This is a follow-up to an earlier order of 76 aircraft the airline placed two years back. As of now, Akasa Air has 22 aircraft in its fleet, while there are 202 Boeing 737 MAX that are yet to be delivered.

Speaking at the Wings India event, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia called Akasa’s triple-digit order a landmark order. “This is the first order that has been signed on Indian soil,” Scindia said. Scindia also stated that the industry is looking to more than double the fleet capacity in the next decade.

Earlier this month, a Reuters report, quoting sources said that India’s youngest commercial airline was set to place an order for around 150 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody planes.

In 2023, Akasa Air claimed that it became the first airline in Asia to induct B737-8-200 aircraft after inducting one in the fleet, its 20th aircraft.

India’s newest aviation player’s 22 aircraft fleet includes 21 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and one Boeing 737 MAX 8 200.

Since commencing operations in August 2022, Akasa Air has set a global record by becoming the fastest airline to reach a fleet size of 20 aircraft within its first year. The airline has already served over 6.3 million passengers, connecting 18 Indian cities. It is poised to announce the start of international operations, focusing on the Western Asian region.

November 2023 data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) shows Akasa holding a steady 4.2% market share since August 2023 against IndiGo’s 60% and Tata Group airlines’ combined 26%. Earlier in the year, the airline briefly surpassed SpiceJet in market share for two consecutive months from June to July. However, it was later hit by the abrupt departure of about a tenth of its pilots and had warned it was flying less as a result, costing it market share.
