Bullet list

  • The CRO should have the right mix of education and industry experience and the IRM’s pathway to Fellowship is the gold standard for ERM professionals.
  • The CRO should have ‘skin in the game’ on every engagement and be involved in every key decision referred to management. This will ensure the CRO has a ‘seat at the table’ as part of the management committee.
  • The CRO should be exposed to various risk management techniques, governance issues, diverse business/services, and risk regulations.
  • The CRO should work on building a risk culture across the organisation through Business/Function Risk Officers, thereby creating future leaders who think about breadth aspects in addition to their areas of expertise.
  • The CRO should be aware of global developments, industry updates, geopolitics, economic aspects, etc. Strong corporate connections, networking, and a broad reading spread are key.
  • The CRO should invest in creating qualified risk champions who are not risk experts but business experts taking risk-based decisions in various departments.

Number list

  1. False Urgency: This dark pattern refers to an act of misleading a user into believing that there is a false sense of urgency or scarcity to persuade them to act quickly and make a purchase, e.g. showing false popularity of a product or service to influence a user’s decision. A lot of times, when users are adding products to their cart, there is an instant pop-up stating, “only a few items are left”, when in fact the product remains in stock even after weeks (sometimes even at reduced prices!).
  2. Basket Sneaking: This dark pattern is the act of automatically adding extra items like products, services, charitable contributions or donations during the checkout process on a platform without the user’s consent, resulting in an unintended increase in the total amount payable by the user. The most common example being the Rs. 1/- donation, which is automatically added during checking out and does not usually meet the eyes of the customers (given that the addition made to the cart is almost negligible).
  3. Forced Action: This dark pattern refers to compelling a user to purchase extra items, subscribe to unrelated services, or share personal information just to access or buy the initially desired product or service. A very common example of ‘Forced Action’, is that of gated websites. There are numerous websites/applications which allow the users to access the information/data only after signing up. These are a means to collect personal data for targeted advertisements, et al.
  4. Subscription traps: Also known as a “Roach Motel”, this pattern makes it difficult or impossible for users to cancel a subscription, such as by requiring them to call a customer service number or navigate through a complex maze of menus. There are several applications, which do not show the option of closing or de-activating the account in a straight-forward manner. In a market where every user is not tech savvy or has the patience of going through several steps to de-activate his/her account, the accounts of such users remain active, thereby granting perpetual access to their personal data.

For the unversed, Poonam Pandey’s ‘death’ news was announced in a post shared on her official Instagram handle on February 2. “This morning is a tough one for us. Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness. In this time of grief, we would request for privacy while we remember her fondly for all that we shared,” the post read.

However, a day later, the actress came out in a video statement and revealed that she was alive. She argued that the motive of her death news was to create awareness regarding cervical cancer. It did not go down well with everyone and several celebrities including Kangana Ranaut and Karan Kundrra among others lashed out at the actress.

Later, the All Indian Cine Workers Association also demanded an FIR against the actress-model stating that her actions were “highly wrong” and “unacceptable”. The cinema body called for legal action not just against Poonam but her manager too. They condemned the publicity stunt and argued that “no one in the film industry stoops to such levels”.

‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Poor Things’ lead the race for Britain’s BAFTA film awards

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Other leading contenders include French courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall,” boarding school comedy “The Holdovers” and Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro,” with seven nominations each. Grief-flecked love story “All of Us Strangers” was nominated in six categories and class-war dramedy “Saltburn ” in five.

Atom-bomb epic “Oppenheimer” leads the race for the British Academy Film Awards, with nominations in 13 categories including best film — eight more than its box-office rival, “Barbie.”

Gothic fantasia “Poor Things” received 11 nominations on the list announced Thursday, while historical epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Holocaust drama “ The Zone of Interest” had nine each.

“ Barbie,” one half of 2023’s “Barbenheimer” box office juggernaut, also got five nominations, but missed out on nods for best picture and best director.

The winners will be announced at a Feb. 18 ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall hosted by “Doctor Who” star David Tennant.

The prizes — officially called the EE BAFTA Film Awards — are Britain’s equivalent of Hollywood’s Academy Awards and will be watched closely for hints of who may win at the Oscars on March 10.

The best film race pits “Oppenheimer” against “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Holdovers.”

“Poor Things” is also on the 10-strong list for the separate category of best British film, an eclectic slate that includes “Saltburn,” imperial epic “Napoleon,” south London romcom “Rye Lane” and chocolatier origin story “Wonka,” among others.

The best leading actor nominees are Bradley Cooper for “Maestro,” Colman Domingo for “Rustin,” Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers,” Barry Keoghan for “Saltburn,” Teo Yoo for “Past Lives” and Cillian Murphy for “Oppenheimer.”

“Oppenheimer” also received nominations for supporting performers Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr., as well as for Christopher Nolan’s direction and screenplay.

“I couldn’t be happier that the British Academy recognized so many of my collaborators on ‘Oppenheimer,’ especially Chris Nolan,” Murphy said. “Working on the film was an experience I’ll never forget.”

The best leading actress contenders are Fantasia Barrino for “The Color Purple,” Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” Carey Mulligan for “Maestro,” Vivian Oparah for “Rye Lane,” Margot Robbie for “Barbie” and Emma Stone for “Poor Things.”

Harrowing Ukraine war documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” produced by The Associated Press and PBS “Frontline,” is nominated for best documentary and best film not in the English language.

Britain’s film academy introduced changes to increase the awards’ diversity in 2020, when no women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.

The voting process was rejigged to add a longlist round in the selection before the final nominees are voted on by the academy’s 8,000-strong membership of industry professionals.

Under the new rules, the director longlist had equal numbers of male and female filmmakers, but there is only one woman among the six best-director nominees, Justine Triet for “Anatomy of a Fall.” She is up against Andrew Haigh for “All of Us Strangers,” Alexander Payne for “The Holdovers,” Bradley Cooper for “Maestro,” Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” and Jonathan Glazer for “The Zone of Interest.” “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig was a notable omission, as was “Saltburn”’s Emerald Fennell.

Fennell said thatshe was just happy “there are so many women making such exquisite, beautiful work this year.”

“The breadth from ‘Barbie’ to ‘Past Lives’ to ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ to ‘Saltburn’ — these films are all of them so different, and so beautiful,” she told The Associated Press

“That is huge to me personally, to see all of these incredible women making such incredible work. That’s the thing that I hope that young women and girls will look and see.”

BAFTA chair Sara Putt said that she was proud of the academy’s work on diversity, but “the playing field is not level.”

“We’re coming at this from a world that is not fair, in that sense,” she said. “For every one film made by a woman, there are three films made by a man.

“So there’s a really long journey to go on.”

Summary

Hebbar disclosed that the company has already achieved close to 30% representation of women in leadership positions. She firmly believes that integrating more women into the workforce is a key catalyst for realising the ambitious economic target.

Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson at Hindustan Zinc, highlighted the pivotal role that increased female participation in the workforce can play in propelling India towards a $5 trillion economy at an accelerated pace.

Speaking with CNBC-TV18 on the sidelines of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meet at Davos, Hebbar disclosed that the company has already achieved close to 30% representation of women in leadership positions. She firmly believes that integrating more women into the workforce is a key catalyst for realising the ambitious economic target.

During the panel discussion, Romal Shetty, the CEO of Deloitte South Asia, also emphasised the importance of addressing biases in the workplace. “We have built a ‘Bias Store’ with the help of AI to break myths; this is good for the business.”  He stressed the need for mentorship and sponsorship programs to drive positive changes in corporate culture.

Shetty noted that solutions are more effective when there is gender diversity. Shetty shared that one of his initial decisions as a leader was to ensure that 30% of leadership positions were occupied by women.

The broader industry, however, faces challenges in retaining women in the workforce, particularly at the middle-management level, he informed, emphasising the need for a mindset change to attract and retain more women.

“There is a huge opportunity for women in the tech industry,” added Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM, highlighting the need to rewrite leadership job positions to be more inclusive.

She stressed that the tech industry’s biggest challenge is getting artificial intelligence (AI) right and asserted that trust and alignment are core issues that can be addressed by bringing more women into the field.

Vinita Jain, Founder of Biotique, shared her company’s success story, announcing plans for an IPO in 2025. “We are a zero debt company with a strong bottom line. It was my passion to preserve health and beauty. Ayurveda is truly an elixir.”
