India is a land of diverse religious beliefs; its culture is one-of-a-kind, and there are some unique traditions that will not be seen elsewhere. One such tradition is where devotees offer alcohol to deities. Yes, you read that right. Believe it or not but there are seven temples spread across the country where rum, vodka, scotch, whiskies and other spirits are offered to various deities. (Image: Reuters)
The practice of offering alcohol to deities is observed in certain temples and is not common in other temples. It is often associated with specific local traditions, folklore, and beliefs within the Hindu faith. Hinduism is a diverse religion and practices vary widely from one region or community to another. Let’s take a look at the seven temples where liquor is offered to Gods, some of which are considered avatars of Lord Shiva.
No 1. Kal Bhairav Temple | City: Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh | Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient 6000-year-old temple in Ujjain witnesses devotees offering liquor, known as Madira, as part of tantric rituals. Legend has it that the deity, Kal Bhairav, absorbs the alcohol which is later distributed among the worshipers as sacred prasad.
No 2. Kali Mata Temple | City: New Delhi | Devotees flock to the Kali Mata Temple in Delhi’s Connaught Place to offer a range of alcoholic beverages, including whiskey and ‘desi sharab’ (local liquor) to Goddess Kali. Despite the offerings, it is not distributed among worshipers. (Image: Reuters)
No 3. Tarapith Temple | City: Birbhum – West Bengal | At this Shaktipeeth in West Bengal, ‘Karan Sudha’ or alcohol is an essential component of prasad offered to the Goddess, emphasising its significance in Tantra Sadhna. (Image: Tarapith Temple/Facebook)
No 4. Patiala Kali Temple | City: Patiala – Punjab | Built in 1936 by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, this temple witnesses devotees offering liquor along with other offerings like goat meat, chicken meat, and coconut, especially when their wishes are fulfilled.
No 5. Khabees Baba Temple | City: Sitapur – Lucknow | Dedicated to Khabees Baba, a spiritual healer and saint known for his love for whiskies, this temple sees devotees offering alcohol, which is then distributed among dovotees.
No 6. Bhanwal Mata | City: Jodhpur – Rajasthan | Dating back to 1380 and built by bandits, this unique temple offers liquor to Maa Bhunwal or Bhanwal (a form of Goddess Durga), while Maa Brahmani is offered sweets. The ritual involves offering 2 and 1/2 cups of wine from a silver goblet.
No 7. Baba Bhairon Nath | City: Mumbai | Located in suburban Chembur, this shrine is dedicated to Baba Bhairon Nath, an incarnation of Lord Shiva and attracts devotees during ‘Kartik Ekadashi’. Worshippers offer bottles of whisky, rum, vodka, and other spirits at the temple. The offered liquor is then consumed by worshipers as prasad.

Ahead of the Ram Temple Consecration ceremony, the country is seeing a boom in religious tourism. According to a user-generated poll on the social discovery app Hunch, Gen-Z is at the forefront of this wave, gravitating towards specific destinations for spiritual exploration.

Around 4,000 Gen Zs participated in the poll, wherein Kedarnath took the lead with an impressive 39.7% of the votes. Nestled in the Himalayas, its pristine beauty and the sacred Kedarnath Temple make it a compelling choice for those on a spiritual quest. Gen-Z’s choose Kedarnath for its beauty and the amalgamation with spiritual tourism.

Ayodhya follows closely with 35.9% of votes, drawing visitors with its historical and religious significance. The city’s ancient temples and vibrant markets are the primary reason for young people to pick this city. The media glare and limelight on the city has put it on not just the domestic but also global religious tourism map. A new airport and a revamped railway station have made travelling to the temple city convenient for all.

The results of the poll show that Gen-Zs pick Haridwar and Rishikesh as preferred religious tourist destinations. Around 13.5% of the votes went to both these towns that offer a harmonious blend of spirituality and nature along the banks of the Ganges. Rishikesh is being preferred as yoga capital of the country.

The recently revamped holy city of Varanasi, secured 10.9% of the votes, solidifying its place as a timeless religious tourism destination. The Kashi Vishwanath front face and many other revamped ghats have changed the face of Varanasi in the last couple of years. Many G20 meetings held in Varanasi in the last one year helped place the city on the tourism map.

As the spiritual tourism wave continues to sweep India, Gen-Zs are clearly not staying back and jumping on the bandwagon.

Jagannath Temple Heritage Corridor will open to public tomorrow: Here’s all you need to know

The much-awaited ‘Srimandir Parikrama Prakalpa’ (SPP) or Jagannath Temple heritage corridor project, will be open to the public on January 17. A day ahead of the grand opening, a large number of devotees from across Odisha and the country started arriving at the seaside pilgrim town. The entire pilgrim town has been beautifully adorned with flowers, decorative lights, and graffiti, presenting a spectacular look. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the inauguration. (Image: PTI)
Inauguration | The ‘Maha Yagna’ which started on Makar Sankranti Day entered the second day on Tuesday and will culminate on January 17 afternoon with Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb scheduled to offer ‘Purna Ahuti’ (final pouring of ghee on the havan fire) between 1.30 and 2.30 pm, the PTI reported. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will dedicate the project for devotees after the ‘Purna Ahuti’.
Project details | The 75-meter corridor will ensure expansive, unobstructed corridors around the Meghanada Pacheri (outer wall) of the Jagannath temple and will provide the devotees excellent visual connection with the 12th-century shrine. It will also provide amenities to the pilgrims and strengthen the safety and security of the temple and devotees. Security arrangement | 80 platoons (each with 30 personnel) of police, along with 100 supervisory officers and 250 sub-inspector and ASI-rank officials will secure the inauguration of the heritage corridor project. A comprehensive four-layer security plan, covering traffic, VIPs, devotee safety, and smooth darshan will be in place, DGP Arun Sarangi told the press. The influx of devotees | The Odisha government has planned to facilitate the daily visit of 10,000 individuals from various regions of the state to the Jagannath Temple in Puri throughout the month starting January 22. S K Lohani, the Secretary of Panchayati Raj in the state, directed all district collectors to coordinate efforts to ensure the seamless transportation of devotees to Puri. Lohani urged the collectors to request a sufficient number of buses for the devotees’ transportation, with detailed arrangements in place at transit camps to ensure their comfortable stay.
