As Mumbai Indians played their final league phase match in the Women’s Premier League this season ahead of the knockouts phase, team owner Nita Ambani was in Delhi on Tuesday to support the team where she also spoke about the importance of a platform like the WPL for sportswomen in India.

Nita Ambani hailed the WPL as a great opportunity for young girls to rub shoulders with the best players in the world. She said, “What a platform for our girls to perform. These girls are getting to play with the best in the world and it is such a heart-warming feeling.”

She had a special mention for Sajeevan Sajana, one of the team’s breakout stars this year, “I saw Sajana getting the award. She is a graduate of political science, her father is an autorickshaw driver and she chose to play cricket. I hope this sets an example for parents to encourage their girls to choose what profession they wish. Not only for cricket, WPL is an example for girls in all kinds of sports.”

Ambani said that the ethos of #OneFamily and the positive atmosphere were key to MI’s success. “I have been in cricket since 2010 and watching these girls play is one of my most heart-warming experiences. MI is known to be a family and all I tell them is go out, do your best and enjoy yourself.”

MI’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been the leading run-getter for the team this year and put on a spirited performance of 95* in MI’s match v Gujarat Giants, the highest score in this edition so far. Mrs Ambani credited Harmanpreet as well as the team’s support staff led by Head Coach Charlotte Edwards along with Mentor and Bowling coach Jhulan Goswami for the team’s success.

Fernando Varela joins FC Bengaluru FC as head coach, club keen to make a mark in I-League Qualifiers

Two-time BDFA champions FC Bengaluru United believe they are “well placed as a team” as they look to make the climb to the I-League through the I-League 2 matches starting later this month. Spain’s Fernando A. Santiago Varela returns as the Head Coach for the Bengaluru-based team, as they look all set to mount a determined bid to qualify for the I-League.

Speaking at the pre-season press conference in Bengaluru, Gaurav Manchanda, Owner, FC Bengaluru United said, “We are excited to have Fernando back on board. With a new and exciting team that is the perfect mix of youth and experience, we believe his experience and knowledge are what we need to excel and succeed in our growth journey. We have learned from our mistakes in the past season and we are confident of a positive start in this direction under his able guidance. We are excited to take our learnings from last year in the new league format.

“We have a good squad of 20+ players right now right now and the intent we have is to qualify. I believe we are fully ready and we have the set-up for that. Our goal is to eventually make it to the ISL, but we are aware that we have to take it step by step.” Manchanda added.

This is Varela’s second stint as Head Coach of FC Bengaluru United after a short spell in 2023. Varela brings more than five years of experience within the Indian football system. “I am excited to be back with FC Bengaluru United,” commented Varela. “The team that we have picked has players in every position who can come together on the field and play as a unit. We have learned a lot from our last outing in the qualifiers and I believe we have the determination and drive to make it to the I-League.

“Some of the players have played under me in other clubs, so that familiarity helps. But everybody is familiar with my work ethic, they know how I push players during training and what I demand from them in terms of performance. They know how competitive I am. The vision of the club is equally important and that helps as well.”

The last time around when FC Bengaluru United and Varela played in the I League qualifiers, the club fell short by one point. But Varela was confident of making the step up this time around. “We have had a good pre-season preparation this time,” he said. “This gives me great confidence for the season ahead. The coaching staff has done an amazing job and I think this is our opportunity to qualify.”

Manchanda also shared his thoughts on the inspiration behind the FC Bengaluru United kit for the season – which draws from the landscape of Bengaluru. While the red home kit has a banyan tree represented in front, the white away kit features the flowering tabebuia whose petals come together in the shape of the map of Bangalore.

Talking about the new format and the progression pathway outlined by the AIFF, Manchanda praised the “change in the ecosystem”.

“There is clarity now which spurs more players to enter the ecosystem. It also helps clubs to outline their goals and establish a roadmap. There is no ambiguity and this allows international clubs to participate in Indian football, one way or the other.”

Manchanda also said it was “great to have” an increasing number of football clubs in Bengaluru. “It’s great for the players, business and the fans as well, with different philosophies they can align with.”

Australia crushes West Indies in seven sessions to go 1-0 up in Test series

Josh Hazlewood returned with figures of 5/35 as Australia defeated West Indies by 10 wickets under three days to go 1-0 up in the two-match Test series on Friday. Batter Usman Khawaja was hit in his jaw by pacer Shamar Joseph and he is hence likely to miss the second game, but fellow teammate Marnus Labuschagne remained on the crease until the end to see the home team to an important victory.

A handy first-innings lead of 95 had put the hosts in charge of the low-scoring contest and their victory was merely a matter of time after Hazlewood blew away the West Indies top order on Thursday.

West Indies followed their first innings 188 with another below-par total of 120, losing their last four wickets for 47 runs on Friday morning, which left Australia needing 26 to go 1-0 up in the two-Test series.

The home side knocked off the target in 6.4 overs to triumph inside three days and cement their position at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. West Indies have not won a test Down Under since 1997 and few expected that winless streak to end after they arrived with a weakened squad.

The Caribbean side fielded three debutants after their best all-rounders, Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers, skipped the series opting to play in lucrative T20 leagues instead. Australia had no such concerns though and hometown hero Travis Head once again proved his worth in the middle order by smashing the only century of the match that made all the difference.

Thoroughly outplayed, West Indies may prefer to look at the silver lining having unearthed a future match-winner in Shamar Joseph, who dazzled in his test debut. The 24-year-old fast bowler from Guyana smashed 36 at number 11, their second highest individual score in the first innings, and followed it with a five-wicket haul in his maiden test. The second and final Test in Brisbane, a day-night affair, begins on Thursday.

Seasoned coach trio including Mickey Arthur quit NCA roles in Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the trio of Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Andrew Puttick have resigned from their respective roles in the country’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore.

Arthur was appointed the director of men’s cricket in April last year, while Bradburn was made the head coach and Puttick the batting coach.

Pakistan’s failure to make the knockout stage of the ODI World Cup in India in November prompted the board to remove them from the national team coaching staff and put them in charge of the NCA.

Former captain Mohammad Hafeez served both as team director and head coach during a recent tour of Australia, where Pakistan lost all three Tests.

“All three individuals informed the Pakistan Cricket Board of their decision to leave their respective jobs by the end of January 2024,” the board said in a statement on Thursday.

“The decision was taken amicably between all the stakeholders.”

Arthur remains Derbyshire’s head coach, a role he maintained while doing Pakistan duties. Bradburn has taken over as Glamorgan’s head coach, and Puttick has joined Afghanistan’s coaching staff.

Usman Khawaja unlikely for second Test vs West Indies due to jaw injury

Australian opener Usman Khawaja is unlikely to turn up for the second Test against West Indies after suffering a blow on his jaw in the first match of the series in Adelaide. The home team overcame the Caribbean challenge under three days, but Khawaja was hit by a delivery from Shamar Joseph.

Australia wrapped up a 10-wicket victory inside seven sessions but Khawaja retired hurt after being hit on the helmet by a short delivery from Shamar Joseph. The 37-year-old spat blood and was feeling his jaw before leaving the ground.

The second and final test, a day-night affair in Brisbane, begins on Thursday. “Unfortunate, he bit his tongue as well,” West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said. “Let’s hope he’s okay, no one wants to see a guy get injured playing this game that we love.”

Matthew Renshaw is likely to replace him in Brisbane should Khawaja miss out. Following David Warner’s retirement, Australia fielded a new opening pair with Steve Smith moving up from number four to join Khawaja at the top of the order.

Super Cup teams return to LALIGA Matchday 21 action as Barcelona, Atletico Madrid face tricky challenges

Matchday 21 of the current LALIGA campaign is coming up this weekend and this will be the first league action for the four Super Cup teams in two and a half weeks. Real Madrid will hope to build on last week’s Super Cup victory when they host UD Almería, while FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid have tough trips to Andalusia and CA Osasuna will host Getafe CF.

There will be 10 fixtures taking place across Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, starting with Cádiz CF’s visit to Deportivo Alavés. Los Amarillos have now gone 16 matchdays without tasting victory in LALIGA, but they did defeat Deportivo Alavés earlier in the season and will hope to secure a much-needed three points in the Basque Country.

Four fixtures follow on Saturday, starting with Rayo Vallecano’s clash against UD Las Palmas in Vallecas. These are two sides who play attractive football, so it’ll be a joy to watch the likes of Isi Palazón and Sergio Camello go up against Munir El Haddadi, Alberto Moleiro and co.

Villarreal CF take on RCD Mallorca next, and this is a duel between two sides who find themselves level on 19 points in the table and looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone, which is just four points away. Both squads will hope to take victory to inch away from danger.

Mestalla hosts the next of the weekend’s fixtures, and it’s a duel between two in-form teams as Valencia CF host Athletic Club. The Basques have moved into third position by going 10 league matches undefeated and by winning their past four, including last weekend’s Basque Derby, but Los Che are also in good form with three victories in a row in LALIGA. It promises to be a mouthwatering duel on Saturday evening.

Real Sociedad lost the aforementioned Basque Derby last weekend, so Imanol Alguacil’s squad will be determined to get back to winning ways when they visit RC Celta on Saturday night. La Real will also want to shake off the bad memories from their previous meeting with RC Celta, when they conceded a 94th minute equaliser to Óscar Mingueza.

CA Osasuna and Getafe CF kick off Sunday’s action, and the fans at El Sadar will be hoping that Los Rojillos can end their terrible run of form against the club from Madrid. CA Osasuna haven’t won any of their past nine against this opponent, including a 3-2 defeat earlier this term, and won’t want to make it 10 in a row.

On Sunday, Real Madrid return to league action with an opportunity to, at least temporarily, move back to the top of the table. The Super Cup champions host UD Almería at the Bernabéu knowing that a win will move them back ahead of Girona FC.

The Estadio Benito Villamarín is the site of the weekend’s blockbuster match, as Real Betis and FC Barcelona square off with both sides desperate to climb up the standings. Manuel Pellegrini’s men sit seventh and Barça are fourth, with both clubs expecting more from this season. With three crucial points at stake, both sides will give their all and should produce a thrilling spectacle.

In the final game of the day, Girona FC will have the chance to respond to whatever Real Madrid do in the afternoon. The Catalan outfit host a struggling Sevilla FC side, one Girona FC defeated 2-1 earlier in the campaign. Yangel Herrera scored in that game and will return from injury this weekend, which is good news for the surprise title challengers.

Atlético de Madrid, whose most recent league outing was a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Girona FC, will return to LALIGA action away at Granada CF in this weekend’s Monday fixture. It took a Memphis Depay wonder strike, which was named August’s Goal of the Month, to send Los Colchoneros on their way to a hard-fought 3-1 win against Granada CF earlier in the season, so Diego Simeone will hope for a more comfortable outing this time around.

Tim David joins MI Emirates as wildcard player, franchise changes coaching staff for Season 2

MI Emirates announced Tim David as their wildcard player ahead of the 2024 season of ILT20.

David, who joined the Mumbai Indians team in 2022, was also a part of the MI New York team which won the inaugural season of MLC. He also played for the MI Cape Town team in the 2023 edition of SA20.

MI Emirates squad start their campaign with an away game in Dubai on January 20.

ILT20 introduced the wildcard feature which allows the franchise to add up to two additional players to its squad beyond the original limit of 22. The wildcard players may come into the league at any stage during the season.

Change in coaching personnel 

Robin Singh will take over as the Head Coach and will be joined by Ajay Jadeja as the batting coach and Mitchell McClenaghan as the bowling coach.

Robin has been with the Mumbai Indians since 2010, playing a key role in Mumbai Indians’ five IPL victories and twoChampions League campaigns. He served as General Manager of MI Emirates in the inaugural season of the ILT20 in 2023.

McClenaghan made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2015, winning four titles with the team, and returns as bowling coach, transitioning from player to coach. Vinay Kumar (assistant coach) and James Franklin (fielding coach), continue from the previous season.

Reliance Foundation’s athletes eye big success at Khelo India Youth Games 2024

Reliance Foundation’s young athletes will be looking to make their mark at the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games, which will be held in the state of Tamil Nadu across four cities from January 19 to 31. A total of six athletes – Sandeep Gond, Rajendra Sidhu, Nitish Kullu, Reyan Basha, Sunita Sant, and Ommkar Prasad Nanda – will be in action at the Games.

This will be the first major event that RF athletes will be competing in 2024. The athletes will look to set the tone for the rest of the year by starting confidently in their first competition of the year.

The trio of Sandeep Gond, Rajendra Sidhu and Nitish Kullu will be competing in the men’s 100m hurdles event, Reyan Basha will take part in the men’s 100m event, Sunita Santa will take to the track in the women’s 2000m steeplechase category. Ommkar Prasad Nanda will be in action in the men’s shot put and hammer throw events. Rajendra and Nitish were a part of the Odisha team which won Gold in the previous edition in the men’s 4x100m relay with a new Khelo India Youth Games record.

Speaking before the competition, Martin Owens, Head Coach, Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High-Performance Centre, said, “Of our athletes, Reyan is ranked no 2 among the entrants in his category, so he is among the strongest medal contenders for us. In the hurdles, Rajendra and Nitish both medaled at the National Junior and Youth Championships respectively, so both of them will be among the top contenders here. This will also be Sandeep’s last event in the U18 category before he makes the step up to the U20 category, so he will be looking to finish on a high.”

 “Ommkar also medaled at the National Juniors, where he was among the youngest athletes, so he will derive confidence from that. This will be his first U18 competition, so it will be interesting to see how he steps up. Sunita was an absolute surprise package as she won bronze at the Junior Nationals in just her second race after taking up the steeplechase event. Our athletes have had the best kind of preparations and we are confident of them doing their best at the Khelo India Youth Games.”

The previous edition of the Khelo India Youth Games saw an impressive display from the Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Center Athletes, who registered Odisha’s best ever medal haul of 7 medals at the competition in athletics, including four Gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Rohit Sharma says 10 players are locked in Indian squad for T20 World Cup

Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that he has finalised about 10 players who will be a part of the Men in Blue squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup that will be co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and West Indies in 2024. The home side whitewashed Afghanistan by 3-0 in their final T20I assignment before the aforementioned tournament that starts in June this year. All-rounder Shivam Dube was adjudged as the Player of the Series for his incredible batting performances in the first couple of games.

Speaking to Jio Cinema, Rohit said some of the promising players will be left out for the event in America but that is the nature of professional sport. “Like when we were playing the ODI World Cup, we tried out many boys in T20s. They perform but when the main squad is announced, some boys have to be left out. So, it is disappointing for them. But our job is to bring clarity to the team,” Rohit said.

“So, in the pool of 25-30 players we have, they know what is expected of each player. We have still not finalised the squad for the T20 World Cup, but obviously in the mind you know the 8-10 players who are going to play,” he added on Wednesday night.

“In the West Indies, the conditions are quite slow, so we have to pick the squad accordingly. Again I say, Rahul bhai and I have tried to maintain clarity in the team. The one thing I have learnt from captaincy is that you can’t keep everyone happy. You have to focus on the needs of the team,” said the skipper.

After a couple of ducks, Rohit got back among the runs with a record fifth T20 hundred. In his memorable effort, the skipper also attempted reverse hits multiple times with the surface playing out a few tricks in the powerplay.

“Been practising different shots”

“I have been practising it a lot in the nets. You have to play some shots in order to put the bowlers under pressure. When the ball is spinning and you can’t hit straight, you have to try something new. “I have been practising reverse sweeps and sweeps for the past two years. You would have seen me play them once or twice in Test matches. You have the options and it’s up to you how you are using those options.

“The ball was spinning and gripping today so, I thought I’d play with the spin rather than step out and hit hard in front of the wicket,” he said. With the three games, Rohit also got up to speed with the team’s plans for the World Cup.
