Maharashtra govt bats for revoking ban on onion exports amid rising resentment among traders

onion prices, onion, onion price in delhi

India was consistently one of the world’s biggest onion exporters until FY23, but the ban on onion exports has changed all that and hurt onion farmers and traders hard. This has also sown some resentment against the government, especially from the trading community, which has long been a staunch support base for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, however, does not want to take any chances and says it has written to the Centre asking that the ban be lifted.

As part of our series, Election Exchange, CNBC-TV18’s Santia Gora speaks to members from the onion supply chain in Maharashtra to understand whether this resentment will spill over into voting preferences in the upcoming general elections.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Vadra may have had to skip the Yatra, but she was doing all the backroom negotiations. Sources close to her told News18: “With her speaking to Akhilesh Yadav, the alliance took the final shape.” But the realistic politician that Priyanka Vadra is, she conveyed it to top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, that it’s best to compromise a little. A win is more important than ego.

The harsh reality is that the Congress has only one Lok Sabha seat in UP’s Raebareli. Also, in the last elections, the Congress lost deposit on 12 of the 17 seats on which it has been given tickets now. Sources say Priyanka Vadra has been asking for and given all such data and she realised that being stubborn would hurt the Congress more than the SP.

Rajya Sabha polls: 3 AAP nominees, 1 BJP candidate elected unopposed to Upper House

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The AAP had nominated Swati Maliwal as its Rajya Sabha candidate, and renominated Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.

Three Aam Aadmi Party nominees in Delhi and a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate in Sikkim were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. Sanjay Singh, ND Gupta and Swati Maliwal were elected unopposed as no candidate from any other party filed nomination for the elections.

“All three Rajya Sabha nominees have been elected unopposed. And, certificates have also been issued,” a senior official in the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office told PTI.

The AAP had nominated Maliwal as its Rajya Sabha candidate, and renominated Singh and Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.

The six-year term of Singh, ND Gupta and Sushil Kumar Gupta ends on January 27. Maliwal’s name was nominated by the party to replace Sushil Gupta.

BJP candidate elected unopposed

BJP candidate Dorjee Tshering Lepcha won the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Sikkim uncontested. Lepcha, who was the only person to file nomination for the election, was declared elected after his papers were scrutinised and found to be in order, officials told PTI.

As the Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim, Lepcha will succeed Sikkim Democrartic Front’s Hishey Lachungpa whose term will end on February 23. Lepcha’s candidature was backed by the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

Lepcha’s nomination is seen as his reward for helping the BJP become a major player in the Himalayan state. Lepcha along with nine SDF MLAs switched over to the saffron party, making it the second largest party in the state assembly overnight.

Expelled TMC MP Mahua Moitra vacates government bungalow

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

The Directorate of Estates has sent a team of officials to evict former TMC MP Moitra from her government accommodation, an official said.

Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra on Friday, January 19, vacated the government bungalow allocated to her in the national capital following her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December 2023. The Directorate of Estates has sent a team of officials to evict former TMC MP Moitra from her government accommodation, an official said.

Moitra said she had vacated the accomodation before authorities came. “House number 9B Telegraph Lane in New Delhi occupied by Mahua Moitra was fully vacated by 10 am today morning and the possession was handed over by her lawyers to the DoE who are inspecting and engaged in due process. The premises were vacated before authorities arrived and no eviction took place at all,” Moitra’s office told ANI.

Earlier this week, the DoE issued an eviction notice to Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha last month.

On Thursday, Moitra failed to get any relief from the Delhi High Court which refused to stay the DoE notice and asked her to vacate the government bungalow.

Justice Girish Kathpalia said no specific rule has been brought before the court which dealt with the eviction of MPs from government accommodation after they cease to be lawmakers.

PM Modi to visit multiple temples in Tamil Nadu on January 20, 21

KV Prasad Jun 13, 2022, 06:35 AM IST (Published)

Listen to the Article (6 Minutes)

Summary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit some significant temples in Tamil Nadu on January 20 and 21, his office said on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit some significant temples in Tamil Nadu on January 20 and 21, his office said. The visit to various temples by the prime minister comes ahead of the Ram temple ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22 which will be attended by him and a host of other dignitaries.

On January 20, Prime Minister Modi will participate in a programme at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, at around 11 AM. He will also listen to various scholars reciting verses from the Kamba Ramayanam in the temple, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.

Thereafter, Prime Minister Modi will reach Rameswaram at around 2 pm and perform ‘darshan’ and ‘pooja’ in Sri Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple.

Continuing the practice being observed during the prime minister’s visit to temples in the last few days, wherein he attends Ramayana chanting in various languages (such as Marathi, Malayalam and Telugu), he will attend a programme ‘Shri Ramayana Paryana’ in this temple.

In the programme, eight different traditional Mandalis will recite the Sanskrit, Awadhi, Kashmiri, Gurumukhi, Assamese, Bengali, Maithili, and Gujarati Ramkathas, recounting the episode of Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya, the statement said.

“This is in line with Bharatiya cultural ethos and bonding, which is at the core of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’,” the statement said.

In Sri Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple, Modi will also participate in Bhajan Sandhya, where multiple devotional songs would be sung at the temple complex in the evening.

On January 21, Modi will perform ‘darshan and pooja’ at Kothandaramaswamy Temple, Dhanushkodi. Near Dhanushkodi. Modi will also visit Arichal Munai, which is said to be the place from where the Ram Setu was built.

The Kothandaramaswamy Temple is dedicated to Sri Kothandarama Swamy. The name Kothandarama means Rama with the bow It is said that this is where Vibhishana first met Shri Rama and asked him for refuge. Some legends also say that this is the place where Sri Rama conducted the coronation of Vibhishana.

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, located in Srirangam, Trichy, is one of the most ancient temple complexes in the country and finds mention in various ancient texts including the Puranas and the Sangam era texts. It is famous for its architectural grandeur and its numerous iconic gopurams.’

The main deity worshipped here is Sri Ranganatha Swamy, a reclining form of Bhagwaan Vishnu.

The Sri Ramanujacharya, the great philosopher and saint, is also deeply associated with this temple’s history. Moreover, there are various important places in this temple — for example, the famous Kamba Ramayanam was first presented publicly by the Tamil poet Kamban in a particular place in this complex.

The main deity worshipped in this temple is Sri Ramanathaswamy, which is a form of Bhagwan Shiva. It is a widely held belief that the main lingam in this temple was installed and worshipped by Sri Rama and Mata Sita. The temple contains one of the longest temple corridor, which is also famous for its beautiful architecture.
